From technology and mountains to power and the future: Meet Morten Bygland at Cegal

When Morten Bygland joined Cegal in June 2023 as Senior Sales Manager for Power & Renewables, he had already been part of the power industry for many years - an industry he describes as both complex and full of potential.

- I chose the power industry because of the huge opportunities that exist here. After years of technological stagnation, the industry has really started to embrace digitalization and new technology. It's a development I want to be part of," says Morten.

Morten has been closely following developments in the energy sector, and he points in particular to renewable energy as the key to meeting both energy needs and climate goals.

We have a unique position in Norway. The combination of over 100 years experience of hydropower and 50 years experience of oil and gas gives us a solid starting point. Now it's about using that experience in a smart and sustainable way.

But it's not just solar and wind that are driving the sector - technology also plays a crucial role.
- I believe we will see an explosion in the use of open data, interoperability and digital twins. This will provide better insight and more flexible solutions - for example, virtual power plants," he explains enthusiastically.

Digitalization and security - in focus

When we ask what the biggest challenge is right now, he is clear:
- The pace of implementation of new technology. Large investments and a high level of digital maturity are required. In addition, geopolitical threats make IT security a top priority for industry players. That's why Morten and his team at Cegal are working to help utilities make the right choices - and find innovative, secure solutions.

Superheroes and misunderstandings

Morten is passionate about a power industry that is more flexible, more interconnected - and less dependent on heavy infrastructure.
- It's all about rethinking and combining the best of traditional and modern solutions, he says.

He laughs a little when we ask him which movie genre the power industry would be.
- I go for Avengers. Different renewable technologies - solar, wind, hydro, geothermal - coming together to save the world. Each has its superpowers. Together they are unstoppable.

A tip from a former colleague led Morten to Cegal.
- I had worked for many years in a major Nordic IT player. When I got to know Cegal, I quickly realized that this was something for me.

In Cegal I get to work with technology and energy - and with very talented colleagues. We may not be the biggest, but we're definitely among the most exciting.

And how can Morten contribute to strengthening Cegal's position in the market?
- I have a background from the entire value chain - from development projects to digitization. I know the players and their needs well. This means that I can contribute both strategically and practically, he concludes.
