465,000 NOK saved every month with 1,000 TB cleared
Sval Energi* is a leading Norwegian energy company with extensive operations on the Norwegian continental shelf.
Like other companies in this industry, Sval handles large amounts of data from seismic, drilling, production, and reporting. In addition, the authorities require data sharing through the national data bank Diskos, which further increases data volumes.
Historically, a lot of data has been stored locally, often without regular review or deletion. Over time, this had led to a complex data structure, high storage costs, and a reduced overview of which data was actually valuable.
Partnership with trust as a foundation for change
Sval Energi and Cegal have been working together since 2019 through an Agile Governance partnership characterized by openness, trust, and shared responsibility for improvement.
In the fall of 2024, Cegal initiated a Data Assessment program to map stored data and identify redundant volumes. Sval Energi responded with a clear challenge: Reduce the amount of data by 60%. An ambitious goal, and the start of a project that has shown how structured collaboration and technical insight can create business value.
Rule-driven deletion with user support
Cegal developed a rule-driven method for data deletion based on both technical and business criteria. Through workshops with Sval Energi stakeholders, rules for deletion, preservation, and quality assurance were defined, tested, and adjusted. The approach ensured that valuable data was preserved, while duplicate and outdated files were removed. The entire process was carried out with clear ownership, documented control, and ongoing quality assurance - without compromising security or regulatory requirements.
Results: 1,000 TB deleted - 465,000 NOK saved every month
The project reached and exceeded its goal. During implementation, over 1,000 terabytes were deleted, and storage costs were reduced by more than two-thirds.
The most important results:
📉 66% reduction in data volume - over 1000 TB deleted
💰 £465,000 saved per month, freed up for other initiatives
📊 Better data quality and overview - easier access to quality-assured data
🔁 Lasting framework for data management, with clear ownership and routines
The project has delivered both immediate savings and a more sustainable data environment.
From cleanup to strategy, creating long-term value
The project has established a framework to ensure that new data is systematically assessed and that decisions on deletion and storage are made with business value in focus. Reduced costs provide financial room for maneuver, and increased data quality provides a better basis for decision-making.
This is not just about cleaning up - but about using data where it actually creates value.
The project team at Cegal
Value for Sval Energi
Significant savings on operations and storage - over NOK 5.5 million saved annually
Sustainable routines and clear ownership of data established
Easier access to data and higher confidence in data quality
More efficient and secure operations
Value for Cegal
The project has provided Cegal with valuable experience, as well as a methodology for data assessment that can now be used by other players in the energy and industrial sectors. Although the measure resulted in lower revenues related to storage, it strengthened Cegal's position as a strategic partner with a clear focus on the customer's long-term gain and business value.
