Kerteminde Forsyning achieved success with GIS on Oracle Cloud

Editorial staff Cegal want to build a stellar nextgen tech company that enables a more sustainable future, and shape the digital future by turning complex IT into digital success stories.

By moving their Oracle database to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Kerteminde Forsyning achieved flexibility and scalability, and with Basecare Discover™, they are able to ensure stability and performance.

Kerteminde Forsyning A/S was established in 2009 and is now a utility company with over 40 employees. Their services include water supply, district heating, waste management, and sewage disposal for a wide range of customers. Every year, Kerteminde Forsyning produces approximately 1 million cubic meters of clean drinking water and treats 2.5 million cubic meters of sewage. With a network of around 200 km of drinking water pipes and 476 km of sewage pipes, they provide reliable water supply to 7,800 households and businesses among their total of 14,000 residential and commercial customers.

Limited by on-premises

To deliver utilities to their many customers in Kerteminde, Kerteminde Forsyning uses a GIS solution from the technology company Hexagon. GIS is a software system designed to collect, manipulate, analyze, and present geographic data. At Kerteminde Forsyning, it is used to manage and provide an overview of the location of pipes and utility facilities for water supply and district heating. The software was running on an Oracle database and was hosted on-premises, which created several challenges.

With their previous solution, Kerteminde Forsyning experienced challenges related to performance, scalability, and last but not least, operating costs, which they wanted to reduce. Their on-premises solution resulted in limitations in capacity and resources, which over time could make it difficult to handle increasing amounts of data and expectations for fast access to updated information from both internal and external stakeholders.

Maintaining an on-premises infrastructure often requires ongoing and significant investments in hardware, software updates, and IT personnel, which can result in high operating costs and limited flexibility to accommodate changes in needs and growth.

Having the database run optimally is crucial for Kerteminde Forsyning's business-critical GIS system, which plays a central role in the administration of the utility infrastructure. A reliable database ensures fast access to information and, most importantly, that the database is not corrupted, unstable, or at risk of being lost altogether.

Today, data is a significant factor in running a modern utility company and must, therefore, support their needs for quick decision-making and efficient maintenance.

Scalability and efficiency with Oracle Cloud.

The challenges related to performance, scalability, and costs motivated Kerteminde Forsyning to seek a more efficient and cost-effective solution. The goal was to modernize their infrastructure. In collaboration with Hexagon and Cegal, Kerteminde Forsyning concluded that the best solution was to move their on-premises database to the cloud.

”One of our primary goals was to find a cost-effective solution that still met all of our requirements without limiting our database environment, which we could achieve by migrating to the cloud.”

Heidi Kryger, Mapping and GIS employee

After moving their database to OCI, Kerteminde Forsyning can now take advantage of the benefits of cloud technology, including elastic resources that can be customized to fit their needs, as well as a more agile operating model. This has provided them with the desired flexibility and scalability without increasing their costs.

”It has been a very good set-up process where we have been guided through everything and have had everything set up easily and quickly”

Heidi Kryger, Mapping and GIS employee

By moving to OCI, they avoid the expenses associated with hardware expansions while benefiting from a more flexible cost structure and a more agile infrastructure.
