Having worked as a software developer and consultant at Cegal, and now armed with a year of valuable tech experience, I made the bold decision to embark on a journey of learning Norwegian at the beginning of 2023. While my path may not be extraordinary, I firmly believe that sharing my experience can provide much-needed guidance and inspiration to other beginners who are eager to explore a new language.

With that in mind, I am excited to delve into the six reasons why I consider learning a new language crucial for consultants. I will unveil the three essential habits that have proven instrumental in my language-learning journey, as well as three enjoyable routines that have helped me along the way.

The importance of knowing the local language as a consultant in a foreign country

Working as a consultant abroad, especially in the tech sector, involves more than just technical expertise. It requires an understanding of the local culture and language to effectively communicate and engage with clients, stakeholders, and team members. For me the following aspects have been the most important in motivating me to start my language journey in Norwegian:

  1. Enhanced communication: Mastering the local language allows for clearer and more efficient communication with clients and colleagues. This is especially important in situations where nuances and technical details need to be precisely conveyed.

  2. Cultural integration: Language is a gateway to understanding the local culture. As a consultant, being culturally aware can facilitate smoother interactions and foster trust with local clients and colleagues.

  3. Professional advantage: Knowing the local language can give you a competitive edge in the job market. It demonstrates your commitment and adaptability, qualities highly valued in consultancy roles.

  4. Network expansion: Being fluent in the local language opens up more networking opportunities, allowing you to connect with a broader range of professionals and industry experts.

  5. Client satisfaction: Clients value consultants who take the initiative to speak their language, as it demonstrates a deep respect for their culture and fosters stronger, more productive working relationships.

  6. Personal growth: Mastering a new language not only stimulates your cognitive abilities but also fosters personal growth and instills a profound sense of accomplishment.

As I continue my journey in learning Norwegian, these benefits become increasingly evident in my professional interactions. Whether you are a software developer, a tech consultant, or any professional working abroad, investing time in learning the local language can significantly impact your career success and personal growth.

Initial steps

My commitment to mastering Norwegian began early this year and now I've recently completed the A2 level, a significant milestone for me as I now feel I am moving into more advanced learning.

Language Exchange Walks: I go for weekly walks with a Norwegian friend, which offers a natural setting for practicing conversational skills and exchanging language knowledge.

Conclusion

Learning Norwegian has become more than just a quest to master a new language for me; it has become an integral part of my everyday life, making the process enjoyable and enriching. My unique approach showcases the effectiveness of practical strategies and incorporating fun elements to enhance the language learning experience. I hope my personal journey serves as an inspiration for anyone ready to embark on their own exciting language learning adventure. Good luck! 💚
