What is UI?

The user interface (UI) is the point of human-computer interaction and communication in a digital product or service. Based on how users interact with UIs, they can be roughly divided into graphical UIs (GUIs) such as computer’s desktop, voice-controlled UIs (VUIs) such as Siri or Alexa and gesture-based UIs such as VR games.

A well-designed UI helps users getting their tasks done easily and with minimum effort, it provides an enjoyable and personalized experience that will keep users returning to your application or product. UI design is thus a crucial part of user experience (UX) design.

While UX design is focused on the complete users’ journey when using a product, UI design is responsible for visual elements of an application and the interaction design. Visual design defines how the interface looks, including color, typography, graphics etc. and interactivity is responsible for how the various elements of an UI behave and function. For example, what happens when a user clicks on a particular button. Another aspect of UI design is information architecture, i.e. how the content within the UI is organized and labelled.
