What is Sovereign Cloud?

Sovereign Cloud is a cloud infrastructure that operates in a specific country or region and meets an organization's legal and ethical data protection standards. Sovereign Cloud ensures that all data remains within the specified geographic boundaries.

Sovereign Cloud enables companies and organizations to store and process data securely and independently of third parties or foreign authorities. In this way, companies can gain full control over their data in terms of both availability and security and at the same time avoid the risk of their data being controlled by external parties.

For companies that process sensitive data such as financial companies, the healthcare sector or companies that work with intellectual property, Sovereign Cloud can be extra important. With a Sovereign Cloud solution, they can achieve higher security and protection of their data while maintaining their own standards for data management and security.

Similarly, Sovereign Cloud can also be an attractive solution for governments and authorities that want to handle and store sensitive data within their own region. It allows them to avoid the risk of data breaches or theft from foreign cloud service providers while providing increased protection against cyber espionage and ransomware from foreign governments or hacker groups. /

Examples of popular Sovereign Cloud solutions include:

Oracle: OCI offers a selection of deployment models that meet organizations' privacy, data residency, security and compliance requirements. Oracle has established data centers in several European countries and has a strong presence in the EU. Most recently, Oracle has launched Oracle EU Sovereign Cloud, a cloud solution specifically designed to meet EU data residency and sovereignty requirements. The new cloud environment is divided into two different regions, located in Madrid and Frankfurt, and is separated from the rest of Oracle's cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft: Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty is specifically designed to meet the sovereignty needs of governments and the public sector. Cloud for Sovereignty enables the benefits of cloud and offers advanced features to meet specific compliance, security and policy requirements. With Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty, organizations gain greater control over their data and increased transparency into the cloud's governance processes. Features like Sovereign Landing Zones, local policy packs and increased transparency create a virtual sovereign cloud environment for workloads.

AWS: Although AWS does not have a dedicated Sovereign Cloud solution, they are committed to giving customers control over their data and meeting the requirements of digital sovereignty. Instead of offering a separate platform, they integrate sovereignty functions as part of their cloud infrastructure. With AWS, customers can determine the location and movement of their data using tools and security measures such as AWS Control Tower and the AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) External Key Store. In addition, AWS offers high availability, resiliency and a wide range of encryption capabilities to ensure that customers' data remains protected and meets their regulatory requirements.
