What is GIS?

GIS is short for Geographic Information System. GIS is a framework designed to capture, store, analyze, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. GIS systems are used to present any type of geographic data including satellite imagery, aerial photos, or infrastructure information which is then combined with other data to build detailed maps and dashboards.

GIS is a broad field that covers many technologies, processes, and methods. It is a valuable tool in many different industries, including engineering, planning, management, transportation/logistics, insurance, and telecommunications. It is also used especially in Denmark in Utilities and Municipalities.

With its versatility and functionality, GIS is an indispensable tool when working with geographic data and analysis. By assisting businesses in achieving more efficient analysis of their geographic data, GIS can lead to better decision-making and more effective resource management.

There are several different GIS software systems available on the market, including Carto, MapBox, Hexagon (Intergraph), ArcGIS (Esri), MapInfo, and publicly available OpenSource solutions. All systems offer different features that can be adapted to companies' unique needs and budgets.
