What is a Data Warehouse?

A data warehouse is a central database where we collect different types of data from the business and compile data in a way that makes it easy to gain insight. With the aid of various techniques, a data warehouse can contain historical information that cannot be found in the source systems.

Data warehouses consolidate all business data in a central location and act as a "simple source of truth", in order to provide the best possible background information for making good decisions at operational, tactical and strategic levels.

Cloud-based data warehouse

Data warehouses have historically been installed on-prem at the company's own data centre, but cloud-based data warehouses has advantages which are starting to become apparent. For example, in the case of a cloud-based data warehouse, it is easier to scale up and down as needs change, it is quicker to get started, and it is possible to take advantage of the overall benefits of a cloud environment.
