What is sustainability?

Sustainability is a term that is used to characterize economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human societies.

In this sense, the term is derived from the 1987 Brundtland Report, in which sustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainability contains two key concepts:

1. The concept of need, especially the basic needs of the world's poor, who should be given overriding priority.
2. The idea of limitations that follow from technological development and social organisation on the ability of the environment to meet current and future needs.

The term ‘sustainable development’ was later used in the UN’s Agenda 21 program during the Rio Conference in 1992. During the World Summit on Social Development in 1995, sustainable development was defined as "the framework for our efforts to achieve a higher quality of life for all people", where economic development, social development and environmental protection interact and mutually reinforce each other.

Cegal wants to contribute to a sustainable world and defines this based on the UN definition of sustainable development. There are three pillars to Cegal's contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
