What is Big Data?

Big Data is an expression that used in relation to a massive volume of both structured and unstructured data that is so extensive that it is difficult to process using traditional database and software techniques. The data volume is too large or moving too fast, or it exceeds the current processing capacity to be processed traditionally. Big data "size" is in continuous motion, from a few dozen terabytes to many zetabytes of data.

Big Data has the potential to help businesses improve their operations and make faster, more intelligent decisions. The data is collected from a variety of sources, including e-mail, mobile devices, applications, databases, servers and other means. Once the data has been captured, formatted, manipulated, stored and then analysed, it can help a company gain useful insights to boost revenue, win or retain customers, and improve operations.
