Cegal aims to be carbon neutral by 2024 and pushes the envelope regarding diversity and equality in the workforce. Read on to learn about the key takeaways from the new Cegal Sustainability Report 2022.

As a portfolio company of private equity firm Norvestor, Cegal produce an annual sustainability report that describes the relevance of the work within Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) in the industry we operate within. The report highlights key ESG themes, assesses performance on those themes and provides an action plan to identify value creation opportunities. The annual report monitors progress and keeps us focused on achieving the goals of becoming a more sustainable and future-oriented company over time. Below we have listed the most important areas where we strive to achieve the highest standards of our industry.

Sustainability is one of the most important and pressing topics of our age. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) are the three central factors in measuring a company's sustainability and ethical impact. ESG factors, though non-financial, have a material impact on a company's long-term risk and financial performance. Companies that use ESG standards are more conscious, less risky, and more likely to succeed in the long run.

How Cegal Looks at Sustainability

First, the relevance of ESG is assessed for the industry we operate in, and a long-term vision for a sustainable industry is defined. We determine essential impact areas. Key material themes are then highlighted, taking a perspective on the full value chain. They are reviewed every year. We assess our performance on the identified key topics, reflecting on relevant initiatives and performance metrics. Finally, opportunities are identified where ESG and value creation coincide, formulated in actionable priority projects to drive progress.

To focus our attention on where Cegal can make a difference, we have thoroughly mapped the Cegal activities into the SASB’s materiality map. The acronym SASB stands for Sustainability Accounting Standards Board – a non-profit organisation founded in 2011 by Jean Rogers to develop sustainability accounting.

The purpose of this map is to identify sustainability risks and opportunities and to monitor our progress going forward

Diversity and Equality

Diversity and equality among the workforce are essential to the Cegal sustainability strategy. Cegal aims to:

  • Connect and equip women to shape the future workplace.
  • Set equal pay policy and promote gender equality through Women@Cegal by bringing up discussions on unconscious gender bias and cultural competency.
  • Encourage the use of Women@Cegal, Cegal’s new female network focusing on gender equality and visibility of women in tech, with a monthly target of more than one internal webinar on the platform.
  • Ensure more than 30% female hires.

Although we have reached our ambitions, Cegal will focus on diversity as a fundamental part of the Cegal sustainability strategy also in the future. In 2022 the goal is to have more than 40% new female hires.

Net Zero and Green Energy Transition

Cegal strives to be carbon neutral by 2024 for its operations. By creating a roadmap for emission reduction, including procurement of renewable energy and obtaining Guarantee of Origin certificates, energy consumption is 98% based on renewables, and we closely monitor all aspects of our energy consumption.

Cegal achieved the ISO 140001 certification in 2021, covering environmental topics and standards.

In 2021 Norwegian companies Cegal and SYSCO merged with the vision to create a leading, global technology company that will strongly contribute to the green shift for the entire energy industry, from oil and gas to hydropower and other renewable energy sources. We contribute to the green energy transition in several ways:

  • Supporting customers in achieving their sustainability goals.
  • Expand the share of the revenue from the Renewables vertical by diversifying the offering.
  • Providing digital technologies supporting reduced emissions.
  • Establish metrics to quantify the positive impact of products & services: MWh/% energy savings.
  • By moving customer data from on-premise solutions to the public cloud, the estimated carbon emission reduction can be computed (around a 60% decrease).

The energy sector is undergoing a significant digital transformation, focusing highly on automation and software-based solutions. The Cegal offerings are highly relevant for this transformation, and the Cegal products and services get exposed to further optimalization based on this trend.

Sustainability Principles

Cegal has Sustainability and ESG committee in place to improve coordination and awareness and to assist the various teams in the company with information and activities in achieving our goals in the Sustainability strategy.

  • Key ESG policies are in place in our management system, e.g. Code of conduct, security, Whistleblowing, etc.
  • We review our suppliers for ESG compliance.
  • Cegal is a member of the UN Global Compact forum, the world's largest company network to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.
  • Cegal became a UN Global Compact signatory in 2021, further aligning with the ambition to be more sustainably focused.

Six key sustainability topics at Cegal

Cegal has chosen six key ESG topics. Below, we have listed the topics with some important aspects for each of them.

  1. Energy and carbon
Cegal focuses on reducing its carbon footprint and has set a strategy to do so. By 2024, the aim is to be carbon neutral in targeted areas, including products and components, logistics, travel and own sites and operations.
  2. Talent management and retention
Managing, developing and retaining talent is high on the agenda of Cegal, as evident in the multiple initiatives in place. Health and safety are ensured in accordance with ISO 45001 standards, for which Cegal became certified in 2021. We track well-being and satisfaction through a bi-monthly survey that monitors work tasks, culture, workload etc. We monitor remuneration between men and women. In 2021, the average salary of women was 1% less than men.
  3. Service quality
By following ISO 9001 principles and guidelines, Cegal aims to deliver a quality service. The quality management system (ISO 9001 certified) contains documented processes, procedures, and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and objectives, and a designated HSEQ team (global shared service) is in place. We conduct customer satisfaction surveys, and customer churn is also a pivotal performance indicator for service quality.
  4. Impact of products and services
By diversifying offerings to renewable energy markets, Cegal aims to increase the positive impact of its products and services. As part of the green shift strategy, Cegal aims to extend offerings to markets aligned with the renewable energy transition, including offshore wind, hydropower and electricity networks.
The energy sector will also undergo a digital transformation. With exposure to ocean industries, Cegal aims to become more efficient with its solutions whilst saving emissions.
  5. Data Security & Privacy
To ensure data security and privacy, Cegal has certified its information security management system with ISO 27001. Policies and procedures on data management are established and in line with ISO 27001 and GDPR guidelines. The ISAE 3402 report assures that Cegal has adequate controls to ensure data integrity. Over the past few years, Cegal has had no severe security breaches or hacking incidents.
  6. Sustainability Principles
Cegal has an ESG committee in place. We have reviewed or will review all essential suppliers for ESG compliance. Cegal Humanity was established as an independent organisation, partnering with local organisations to help support or fund local humanitarian or international development projects.
