Gold Medal SQL: 7 disciplines for stable performance and secure operation

In dialog with a customer about their SQL they said: "I want to build a Gold Medal SQL setup." It sounds like a straightforward goal. But if you're responsible for operations and stability, you also know that "good SQL" is rarely that clear in practice. Systems slow down, response times fluctuate, users start complaining, and suddenly you have an incident that's hard to explain.

What Gold Medal SQL means in practice

What does Gold Medal SQL mean? It's about making quality tangible and repeatable. A bit like sports: it's rarely one single thing that determines the outcome. 3. Workload and capacity management

5 Resilience and recovery

If you haven't tested restore, you don't know if you can come back when it counts. Backup provides peace of mind on paper. Restore provides peace of mind in reality. Many organizations have a backup solution but have never practiced a full restore, never measured how long it takes, or never clarified what is actually acceptable if something goes wrong.

It's crucial that you know what your RPO and RTO are in practice and that you can live up to them. This means tested restores, clear procedures and a plan that works, even when it's Friday afternoon and the person with the critical knowledge is away for the weekend.

6. Security and access management

If it's unclear who has access to what and why, it's an operational and security issue, not just a compliance issue. Security in SQL environments rarely falls apart overnight. It happens gradually. More people gain access, roles are copied, temporary rights become permanent, and suddenly it's unclear who can do what and why. Then when you get an audit requirement or security incident, the cleanup becomes heavy and stressful.

This can be avoided by limiting access by default (least privilege), a clear role model, continuous review and logging that can actually be used. Not because you want to make it difficult for people, but because you want to make it possible to manage risk with peace of mind.

7 Changes and releases

If you hold your breath with every change, it's a sign that your release practices aren't strong enough yet. Many operational issues start after a change. It could be a release, a new report, a quick fix, an index change, or a configuration that was adjusted. More often than not, the problem is not that the change was "wrong", but that it wasn't validated in a way that matches reality.

This is where testing gates make sense. Not as a theoretical DevOps term, but as controlled validation steps before anything reaches production. Test environments, reviews, verified rollback, and a habit of making changes traceable.
