R gives a broad spectrum of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classic statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification, grouping, ...) and graphic techniques, and is highly extensible.
One of R's strengths is that it is easy to create high-quality publication-ready plots, including mathematical symbols and formulae where needed. Strong emphasis has been placed on the use of standards for minor graphic design choices, but the programmer retains complete control.
