Multi-cloud

What is Multi-cloud?

As the word suggests, multi-cloud, multi cloud or multicloud computing is the use of clouds from more than one public cloud provider. For instance, a business might use AWS for data storage, Google Cloud Platform for development and testing, and Microsoft Azure for disaster recovery.

A multi-cloud strategy gives companies the freedom to use the best possible cloud for each workload and to draw the unique capabilities of every cloud and further reduce the significant cost of using one single cloud. A multi-cloud set up can increase flexibility and redundancy and improve disaster recovery capabilities.

Whether to use a multi-cloud architecture or not depends on the problem that you are in the business of solving – and that you are aware of all the pros and cons of a multi-cloud deployment. Multi-cloud is not a small project and requires a clear strategy and careful planning due to its increased complexity and higher skill requirement.

Finding and hiring the right expertise is not straight forward nor cheap. In addition, embracing a multi-cloud solution will expose your business to a potential increase in IT security risks as there are several weak spots that can increase exposure points.

Several of the large hyperscalers / as cloud providers are also called, are aware of the companies' desire and use of multi-cloud and have accommodated this. Oracle and Microsoft have created an interconnect, which is a direct connection between the two data centers to the advantage of both network latency and complexity.
