What is Mobile payment?

The future is contactless and mobile payments are becoming increasingly widespread, but what does it actually mean? With mobile payment, you can easily pay from or via your mobile phone using an app. Instead of paying by cash or credit card, you can use a mobile phone to pay for a wide range of services.

In Norway, we perhaps think of Vipps as primarily being a mobile payment service. By focusing on family and friend payments and easy transfers between users, Vipps has established itself as the market leader in mobile payments in Norway. Since then, the integration of eFaktura and bill payment has in many ways made the app more complete as regards financial management.

However, there are numerous mobile payment providers and, in 2019, Vipps gained two major mobile payment challengers in the form of Apple Pay and Google Pay. These payment options are based on NFCtechnology, which is the same technology as that on which contactless bank cards are based. As a result, it is possible to use both apps in any store that has enabled support for contactless payment. Mobile payment using NFC is just as secure as both contactless bank cards and traditional bank cards.

There are many ways of using mobile payment. Here are some examples:

  • Banking services via SMS
  • Mobile transfer
  • Direct operator invoicing
  • In-store payment with NFC

Many of the major banks in Norway use mobile payments. Mobile payments are primarily used for travel, car parking, transactions, vending machines and tickets. It is also becoming increasingly common to use mobile payment for payments both in-store and online, and to pay bills.

Cegal and Mobile payment

For example, Multi Channel Invoice offers the dispatch of invoices via SMS for direct check-out and payment via card or an app such as Vipps. It also supports the direct distribution of invoices via Vipps API in Norway, while the launch of Swish and Mobile Pay is imminent.
